For the hand animal project we had to draw our hand in a position where we could draw an animal within the hand itself. I chose to do a snake for the final drawing, but I also tried drawing a shark as well. The nails of my hand were really well placed for adding to the pattern of the snake to blend the two together better. I personally didn't find this project too difficult because of the modified and blind hand drawings we did. I still liked the idea of combining two objects in one piece though.
Our cartoon skeleton project was to pick a cartoon character, draw them, and add the skeleton and bones of that character. I chose Gru for my project and on the right is the original picture. Creating the skeleton wasn't extremely difficult, it was just adjusting the bones of the stance he was in. The hands and feet were difficult because they were smaller than the other bones, but I think I did well. The gun allowed more creativity because it didn't have a skeleton design to base it off of. I enjoyed this project and it's an interesting idea for other drawings I could make.
The modified contours were the same as the blind contours except we could look at our paper occasionally. We still couldn't lift the pen off the paper. These drawings were much better and I felt I did a good job of showing the lines of the hand, not just the outline. The second drawing might be my favorite because of the way my hand was positioned, there were way more lines that I could show. The modified hands helped improve my drawing skills a lot with just simply drawing every line that you see.
Our first drawing activity was to draw our hands without looking at what we were drawing or lifting our pen off the paper. We had to try and draw every line we could see on the hand and these are my drawings. The first one actually wasn't to bad for a first attempt, it showed some of the lines on the hand and was relatively proportional. The second and third attempts were not that great, they got worse if anything. The second ending up looking really weird because I had curled my hand instead of holding it flat. The third attempt was just too large proportionally but the lines weren't too bad. I was blind doing these, to be fair to myself, and it helped me learn to just draw what you see and not overthink it.
The value chart that I completed in pencil was used to show different shades and how they can create value on shapes. I practiced drawing spheres, cones and cubes using shading techniques we learned. Some of them were done in pencil while the darker ones were completed using charcoal. We were given the option to use either pencil or charcoal on the final project, the one with the three shapes overlapping each other in a row. I decided to use pencil because I felt it would easier to correct mistakes and it would blend better. I shaded the shapes on the right side darker to make it appear like the light source was coming from the left. Adding a surface line helped improve the quality by making the picture more realistic. I think I did well on this project, and I learned specifically how to shade my spheres better during this project.
This is a contour drawing of my shoe in pen. I had to draw my shoe with as much detail as I could lifting the pen off the paper as little as possible. I started with the bottom of the shoe which was one of the more difficult parts with the designs on the side. The laces took the longest though because there were more lines and details on those. The rest of the shoe wasn't that difficult to draw, but I could have added more details by lifting the pen with some of the design. Overall I felt I did really well drawing the shoe.
Overall my experience with oil pastels was good. I learned how to combine colors well and used that skill to make 3D shapes. Using the color combinations I was able to create value and a light source coming from the left. Value was important on the shapes to create the 3 dimensional feel to it. Overlapping also helped create value by making objects seem closer because they are front of another object. Adding a shadow on the surface and shapes helped show the light source more clearly.
